Shadows in the Drift: Visualizing the Tommyknocker Art Contest

Can you give a face to Butte's most legendary subterranean spirits?

For generations, miners working thousands of feet beneath the surface in Butte’s underground drifts reported hearing rhythmic tapping along granite walls and timber supports. Were these elusive figures warning spirits, underground protectors, or mischievous sprites?

The World Museum of Mining invites artists of all ages to help us visualize the unseen in our community art contest! Whether your Tommyknocker is a weathered old sprite, a glowing phantom, or a mischievous wooden protector, we want to see your physical interpretation.
