An 1890s Replica Mine Town

A Glimpse into the History of Mining

Venture 100 feet Underground
Welcome to the World Museum of Mining in Butte, Montana — a one‑of‑a‑kind museum preserving the heart and grit of America’s mining heritage. Founded in 1963 and opened in 1965, the Museum stands at the edge of Butte’s legendary mining era, when the city powered a century of hard‑rock mining and became home to one of the world’s most productive copper districts. Our mission is to keep Butte’s remarkable mining history and cultural heritage alive for generations to come. The World Museum of Mining is one of the few museums in the world built directly on an authentic mine yard — the historic Orphan Girl Mine. Her iconic 100‑foot steel headframe rises above the site, a striking reminder of the miners who worked more than 3,200 feet below ground extracting silver, lead, and zinc from 1875 to 1956. Visitors can step into the life of a miner by touring the massive headframe and descending into the Orphan Girl Mine on our Underground Mine Tour, an immersive experience that brings the sights, sounds, and stories of Butte’s mining past to life. Above ground, wander the brick‑lined streets of Hell Roarin’ Gulch, our meticulously recreated 1890s mining camp. Explore dozens of historic buildings and storefronts that capture the daily lives of the thousands of immigrants who came to Butte seeking opportunity. Discover unique exhibits like the Chinese Laundry, Sauerkraut Factory, First National Bank, Union Hall, one‑room schoolhouse, General Store, and Saloon — each filled with authentic artifacts from the turn of the century. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a Montana traveler, or a family looking for an unforgettable experience, the World Museum of Mining offers one of the most immersive historic mining tours and museum experiences in the country.
Go go go go go to this museum if you have the chance. A rich history of technology, engineering, human folly, hubris, labor, unionization and so much more awaits. Do not skip the mine tour!

This is a neat museum to see. There is plenty to see on the 20 something acres. Good place to kill a couple of hours strolling around and exploring unguided too. It's at the back of the Montana tech school so keep on going if you think you're lost. Check it out, lots of neat stuff to see.
