Self Guided Tour – (Allow 1 hour for tour)

Students explore Hell Roarin’ Gulch (an 1890s replica mining town), the Orphan Girl Ore House and Mine Yard, the Roy Garrett Mineral Exhibit and the Samie Keith Doll and Dollhouse Collection.

Guided Mine Yard Tour – (Allow 1 hour for tour plus 1 hour for Museum)

Learn Butte mining history and methods as tour guides walk guests through the Orphan Girl Headframe, Mine Yard, Dry and Engine Room.

Underground Tour – (Allow 1.5 hours for underground plus 1 hour for Museum.)

Grab your miner’s hard hat and experience what thousands of men experienced as they worked in the veins below the city of Butte. Tour Guides will share their stories as you trek 65 or 100 feet down into the 2,700-foot deep Orphan Girl Mine. Students are fitted with miner’s hard hats and lamps. Close toed walking shoes and jackets are required. The mine workings are not ADA compliant and walking 180 feet of entrance ramp is required; however, visitors with limited mobility may be accommodated for much of the tour. Anyone can turn around at any time.
